Quote from the Supervisor: “I have known Lexi since August of 2020 when I became employed at Blackburn College. Since that time, she has served as a teaching assistant in at least one of my classes each semester. Over the course of these three years, Lexi has clearly demonstrated the attributes of that the Job Well Done Award recognizes.

Lexi has been an exceptional teaching and research assistant over the course of these three years largely due to the skills that make her a perfect candidate for this award. As a double major, Lexi is often enrolled in 18- to 21-semester hours of classes. Despite a difficult and time-consuming course load, Lexi is committed to offering tutoring for General Psychology students (her target audience since Fall of 2020). She demonstrates enthusiasm for working with students and helps them to take their educational paths seriously. In Spring of 2023, her schedule did not align so that she could continue being a primary tutor for General Psychology; yet, she still engages with these students by reviewing their papers, conducting outreach for struggling students, and creating study materials for them. In addition to this already high level of responsibility, Lexi has engaged in several research studies with me as a research assistant. Her hard work and dedication have resulted in the opportunity to present two studies (in addition to one of her own) in Chicago this spring.

Lexi’s initiative, self-motivation, and dependability are consistent and impressive. She often reaches out to students via the Google Classroom without having to be prompted, and she makes connections with students to help ensure they feel comfortable approaching her for help. She shows up to help me when unexpected and jumps at any opportunity I offer her, even if she is already swamped with other work or responsibilities. For example, as part of her role as a tutor for General Psychology, she taught a class each semester. As a research assistant, she picked up the ball on a project and helped me submit it at 11:00 PM at night when she has other responsibilities on her plate.
Lexi has a high degree of integrity and even attempts to instill this facet in others. In part of her work of reviewing papers for students, she will often point out areas where students have accidentally plagiarized. She educates them about plagiarism and helps them to determine how to correct the issue. She is also an honest and forthright individual with healthy boundaries. She works well within a team due to her engaging personality, enthusiasm, strong work ethic, and passion for producing high quality work.

I could go on and discuss Lexi’s academic achievements and campus involvement. Put simply, Lexi exemplifies and exceeds the characteristics for the Job Well Done award.”

OUR WORK COLLEGE MEMBERS

There are currently ten federally recognized Work Colleges, and nine are members of the Work Colleges Consortium. These institutions are small, private, liberal arts colleges with modest enrollments that range from about 150 to approximately 1,600 students. Each school is unique and operates the work program in a slightly different fashion. However, “work-learning-service” is a central component of each Work College. Student work, coupled with robust academics and a spirit of service, is the common denominator shared by all the Work Colleges.
