Jimmy Taylor Brown
Alice Lloyd College, Student Work Supervisor – Janitorial
Alice Lloyd College

Jimmy is quiet, thoughtful, encouraging, and committed. He is always willing to go beyond what is expected of him. I noticed him during athletic events, how he always had a crew with him but it wasn’t just a group of friends there to watch the game, they were all assigned to work after events as a cleanup crew. Even though his work did not officially begin until after the games ended, if he saw a need he addressed it. You then saw his crew members start doing the same. He wasn’t their supervisor, he was just a crew member at the time. It didn’t take long for him to advance to a supervisory role as he was quickly recognized as a true leader. When there was a question about needing something or if something needed done, often you would hear one say, was Jimmy working last night? If so, you do not have to worry because he will have it in a safe place or he will know what to do. In everything he does, he does it with pride and commitment.
UNIFIED BY PURPOSE
OUR WORK COLLEGE MEMBERS
There are currently ten federally recognized Work Colleges, and nine are members of the Work Colleges Consortium. These institutions are small, private, liberal arts colleges with modest enrollments that range from about 150 to approximately 1,600 students. Each school is unique and operates the work program in a slightly different fashion. However, “work-learning-service” is a central component of each Work College. Student work, coupled with robust academics and a spirit of service, is the common denominator shared by all the Work Colleges.
