Berea College

I am from a small town in Central Kentucky, where college was often seen as financially out of reach. When I first heard about Berea College, I did not think it was possible; an institution that paid tuition and provided four years of work experience catered to your field of study. But after touring and beginning my college career, I fell in love with learning in higher education.
Beyond the classroom, a most valuable experience has been my labor position through the Berea College Labor Program. Not only am I a part of a broader community dedicated to keeping our campus running, but I also work directly in the Labor Program and Student Payments Office. Every experience in my role—starting as an office assistant and growing to student coordinator—has been deeply meaningful. Working events, engaging daily with cultures and values through customer service and outreach, and collaborating with co-workers, peers, and organizations all over campus has dramatically influenced my aspirations to work in the helping professions.
Witnessing the impact of our work, whether through systems management, front office operations, student payroll, or event direction—has strengthened my passion for helping others. The past four years of work service learning have equipped me with the skills, experience, and confidence to create meaningful change and guide others, both now and in the years to come.
UNIFIED BY PURPOSE
OUR WORK COLLEGE MEMBERS
There are currently ten federally recognized Work Colleges, and nine are members of the Work Colleges Consortium. These institutions are small, private, liberal arts colleges with modest enrollments that range from about 150 to approximately 1,600 students. Each school is unique and operates the work program in a slightly different fashion. However, “work-learning-service” is a central component of each Work College. Student work, coupled with robust academics and a spirit of service, is the common denominator shared by all the Work Colleges.
