Law Student
Berea College

As a May 2024 Berea College graduate with a degree in Political Science, I can confidently say the Work College model fundamentally shaped my life and future. My time at Berea wasn't just about lectures and textbooks; it was about hands-on experience and real-world skills. Working at the Log House Craft Gallery taught me the ins and outs of customer service and retail, while being a student director of the Labor program was a masterclass in leadership. I managed a team, advocated for over 400 students, and learned how to resolve conflicts and ensure fair treatment. I developed invaluable organizational and communication skills, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Those experiences have been crucial since graduation. I am now working closely with a family law attorney, and the skills I gained– problem-solving, advocacy, and attention to detail– are directly applicable. My time at Berea wasn't just a job; it was a practical education that prepared me for the rigors of law school, which I'll be attending this fall. I truly believe that the unique combination of academic demand and practical work experience at Berea College has been the cornerstone of my success, and will continue to guide me in my legal career.

OUR WORK COLLEGE MEMBERS
There are currently ten federally recognized Work Colleges, and nine are members of the Work Colleges Consortium. These institutions are small, private, liberal arts colleges with modest enrollments that range from about 150 to approximately 1,600 students. Each school is unique and operates the work program in a slightly different fashion. However, “work-learning-service” is a central component of each Work College. Student work, coupled with robust academics and a spirit of service, is the common denominator shared by all the Work Colleges.
